GBPJPY, often called the guppy, prices the British pound in Japanese yen. It combines a risk-sensitive currency with a safe-haven one, so it reacts to Bank of England and Bank of Japan policy, UK data, global equity moods and yen flows, and it is known for wide daily ranges. Liquidity is thinner in Asia and picks up sharply at the London open, staying high into the New York morning. For the maths, the yen is the quote currency, so a pip is 0.01 and one pip on 1 standard lot equals ¥1,000. To get the value in dollars you divide by USDJPY, not by GBPJPY, which means the dollar pip value changes even when GBPJPY itself has not moved.

How much is 1 pip on GBPJPY with 1 lot?
Pip value = 100,000 × 0.01 = ¥1,000, then converted at USDJPY. At USDJPY 150 that is ¥1,000 ÷ 150 = $6.67 per pip; the value depends on the USDJPY rate, not on the GBPJPY price.
How much would a 100-pip move on 0.1 lots of GBPJPY be?
0.1 lots × 100,000 × 0.01 = ¥100 per pip, so 100 pips = ¥10,000. At USDJPY 150 that is about $66.67.
Why is GBPJPY called the guppy?
It is trader slang from the letters G-P-J. The nickname reflects its reputation for volatility; the pip maths is the same as any other yen cross.
