GBPUSD Pip Calculator (Cable)

Calculate GBPUSD pip value, points, lot size, margin and profit for any account currency.

GBPUSD, nicknamed cable after the telegraph line that once linked London and New York, prices the British pound in US dollars. It is driven by Bank of England and Federal Reserve decisions, UK inflation, wage and GDP figures, US data, and broader risk sentiment. The pair is usually most active from the London open through the London–New York overlap, and it tends to move more pips per day than EURUSD, so the same stop distance in pips can be hit faster. Because the US dollar is the quote currency, one pip (0.0001) on a 100,000-pound standard lot is worth a flat $10 in a USD account. Margin, however, rises and falls with the pound, since the notional is 100,000 GBP valued in dollars.

Calculation notes

  • Pip value in USD is fixed at $10 per lot; the wider daily ranges on cable mean stops are often set in more pips, which reduces lot size for the same risk.
  • A GBP-denominated account sees the pip value as $10 ÷ GBPUSD, so it shrinks as the pound strengthens.
  • Margin for 1 lot = 100,000 × GBPUSD price ÷ leverage, so cable usually needs more margin than EURUSD at the same leverage.

FAQ

How much is a pip on GBPUSD?

1 pip = 0.0001. For 1 standard lot the value is 100,000 × 0.0001 = $10, for a mini lot $1 and for a micro lot $0.10 in a USD account.

How do I size a GBPUSD trade with a 40-pip stop?

Lots = risk ÷ (40 × $10). Risking $200 gives $200 ÷ $400 = 0.5 lots. Risking $50 gives 0.125 lots, which most brokers round down to 0.12.

Why is GBPUSD called cable?

The name comes from the transatlantic telegraph cable that carried the pound–dollar rate between London and New York in the 19th century. It has no effect on the calculation.
