USDJPY Pip Calculator

Calculate USDJPY pip value, points, lot size, margin and profit for any account currency.

USDJPY prices the US dollar in Japanese yen. It is highly sensitive to the gap between US and Japanese interest rates, to Bank of Japan policy and to US Treasury yields, and the yen often strengthens when risk appetite fades because it is treated as a funding and safe-haven currency. Comments from Japan's Ministry of Finance about currency moves can also cause sharp swings. The pair trades actively in the Tokyo session and again through London and New York. Its pip maths differs from most pairs: because the yen is quoted to two or three decimals, one pip is 0.01, not 0.0001. One pip on 1 standard lot is ¥1,000, and its dollar value is ¥1,000 divided by the USDJPY rate, so it moves with the price.

Calculation notes

  • Pip = 0.01 and point = 0.001 on a 3-digit quote; a quote of 150.125 has a pipette in the last digit.
  • USD pip value = 1,000 ÷ USDJPY per lot, so it falls as the dollar rises against the yen.
  • Because the dollar is the base currency, margin in a USD account does not depend on price: 1 lot needs $100,000 ÷ leverage.

FAQ

How much is 1 pip on USDJPY with 1 lot?

Pip value = 100,000 × 0.01 = ¥1,000. In USD that is ¥1,000 ÷ USDJPY; at a rate of 150 it is $6.67 per pip per standard lot, or $0.67 for a mini lot.

How much margin does 1 lot of USDJPY need?

With a USD account the notional is simply $100,000, so margin = $100,000 ÷ leverage: $1,000 at 1:100 and $3,333.33 at 1:30, regardless of the exchange rate.

How many lots for a 25-pip stop risking $100 on USDJPY?

Lots = $100 ÷ (25 × pip value). At USDJPY 150 the pip value is $6.67, so lots = $100 ÷ $166.67 = 0.6 lots. At a higher USDJPY rate the pip is worth less and the lot size increases.
