XAUUSD Lot Size & Pip Calculator (Gold)

Calculate XAUUSD pip value, points, lot size, margin and profit for any account currency.

XAUUSD is the price of one troy ounce of gold in US dollars. Gold is a classic safe-haven asset, and it typically reacts to real US interest rates, the strength of the dollar, Federal Reserve expectations, central-bank buying and geopolitical stress. Because it pays no yield, rising real rates tend to weigh on it. Volume is highest during the London session and the overlap with New York, when COMEX futures are most active, and US data such as jobs and inflation reports often trigger fast moves. The maths is where traders get caught out: 1 standard lot is 100 ounces, so every $1 change in the gold price is worth $100 per lot. Most retail traders call 0.10 a pip and 0.01 a point.

Calculation notes

  • Common convention: 1 pip = $0.10 = $10 per lot; 1 point = $0.01 = $1 per lot. Some brokers and traders call 0.01 a pip, so a '50-pip' stop may mean $0.50 or $5.00; confirm which one you use.
  • A $1 price move = $100 per lot, $10 per 0.1 lot and $1 per 0.01 lot.
  • Margin = lots × 100 oz × price ÷ leverage, so it rises as gold rises; contract size can differ by broker, so check the specification.

FAQ

How much is 1 pip on gold with 1 lot?

Using the 0.10 pip convention: 1 × 100 oz × $0.10 = $10 per pip. A point ($0.01) is $1 per lot. If your broker calls $0.01 a pip, a pip is $1 per lot.

What lot size for gold with a $10,000 account and a $5 stop?

Risking 2% ($200): a $5 stop is 50 pips at $10 per pip per lot, so lots = $200 ÷ (50 × $10) = 0.4 lots.

How much does 0.01 lot of gold make per $10 move?

0.01 × 100 oz = 1 oz, so a $10 move = $10 profit or loss.
